Vazhaithandu Poriyal | How to make Banana Stem Stir Fry

Banana stem has fibre its highly used for weight loss. Its also in rich source of potassium and vitamin B6 which helps in production of insulin and haemoglobin. Eating banana stem once in week keeps high blood pressure(B.P.) in control. Banana stem maintains fluid balance within the body. Its a diuretic and helps detoxify the body. 

Its mainly used to treat kidney stones.. Such a wonderful benefits it have... so include this Stem in your diet once a week. Try this easy way of making stir fry/poriyal and comment me back...


1. Take 2 to 3 cups of water in a bowl. Add 2 tbsp of buttermilk to it. Take the banana stem, cut and discard all the outer layer and take the inner part of the stem separately.

2. Cut into discs and remove the threads that comes in between the discs using fingers. 

3. Remove all threads in each discs and chop them into cubes. Immerse the chopped pieces into the butter milk water. 

4, If you want to remove almost all thread.. stir a bamboo stick inside the butter milk water and take it out...You will see thread is twisted on the stick.. just remove it  do the same and remove all.  soak moong dhal in water 

5. Heat a kadai add the chopped banana stem(remove all water), soaked moong dhal, sambar powder, asafetida powder and enough salt and mix well. Then add 1/2 cup of water to it. Keep all immersed in water and cook in medium flame until soft.

6. Add the grated coconut it. Then heat 1 tbsp of oil in a another kadai, add mustard seeds urad dhal and curry leaves to it. 

7. Add the tempering to the poriyal and mix well. Serve hot with sambar and rice.
